About the Guild

The Edmonton Homebrewers Guild (EHG), located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was established in 1986 and became a registered society in 1994. The goals of the Guild, as defined in our constitution, are to:

  1. Engage in enjoyable social activities focused on homebrewing as a common foundation,
  2. To learn more about beer, beer tasting, beer judging, and brewing techniques, based on sharing knowledge and experience,
  3. Promote the hobby and enjoyment of homebrewing, and
  4. Promote the responsible use of alcoholic beverages

Why a "Guild"?

The Edmonton Homebrewers Guild is proud to call itself a "guild," an association of craftsmen, for we consider brewing to be a culinary art form. Much of what the Guild does is to promote the appreciation of beer culture. We do this through teaching our members not only how to brew better beer but also work towards a greater understanding and appreciation of beer as a fine beverage, not just a commodity.

Executive Officers

The following positions make up the club's executive:

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Competition Chair
  • Newsletter Editor
  • Webmaster

These are elected annually at the first general meeting of the brewing year (September). Nominations for these positions can be made by any member.
From time to time, the executive may find it necessary to add other non-official "executive" positions. If any member feels that there is something needing more individual attention, they are encouraged to bring it up at an executive meeting and volunteer to be the latest member of the executive.

Members and Competition

The EHG currently has more than 15 BJCP beer judges, ranging in qualifications from "Recognized" to "National." Most of the judges are "Certified" and most have been active judges for between 5-8 years. There is a keen interest in competition in the Guild. We were very proud that the American Homebrewers Association recognized us as the most competitive club in Canada for the 1999-2000 brewing season and as the 3rd ranking club in North America in 2006. Four of our members are among the top ranking brewers in the nation. However, despite this record of excellence in competition, or perhaps because of it, members are very open to helping each other brew better beers. Members take it as an honour to be bested by another brewer that they have helped along. Because of this spirit of open and friendly competition, we now have a number of new competitors who are starting to make their presence felt in national level events.

Affiliations

The Edmonton Homebrewers Guild (EHG) is affiliated with the Western Confederation of Brew Clubs (WCBC) and is working to support the art of homebrewing in Edmonton, western Canada and across the nation. Additionally, EHG is assisting with the launching of the Canadian Homebrewer of the Year, a competition which we hope will enhance and increase the homebrewing community in Canada.

Membership Eligibility

Membership is open to anyone, from any place, who is interested in brewing better beer and is of legal drinking age in Alberta. Membership in the Guild typically runs around 50 people. Brewing expertise ranges from the most base of novices to distinguished experts who have been at it for about 20 years; included are a few professional brewers. While many members are all-grainers, some of our best brewers are extract specialists. The Guild simply encourages its members to brew better beer, no matter what path they choose to follow to reach that end.
