Gluten Free Beer - Why does it have to look and taste bad?A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with a health issue that required him to go on a Gluten free diet. Apparently this is becoming more and more common. Fortunately the local watering hole (Royal Glenora lounge) we commonly reside in has one example of a Gluten free beer in bottles. The name escapes me and to be honest is not important for this blog. After 3 bottles, we both came to the conclusion that although the beer was OK, it both lacked color and taste. This was not surprising to me as I quickly research into the ingredients required to make a Gluten free recipe and it looks way harder than I am used to when I make good old reliable beer. My question to the Home brewing world and then the commercial brewing world, is lets start coming up with alternative gluten recipes to bring back the color and flavor of true beer to those people who have been forced to give up the drink they truly love. Does anybody out there have any suggestions? Is this something The EHG can work together on to one day persuade one of our local Edmonton commercial brewers to creat a batch for Alberta and beyond?
