Webmasters initial thoughts on contentI would like to see the EHG website become a more used brewing resource. I'm not sure at this point if we should try to make it all-purpose, or cater specifically to EHG members at the exclusion of non-members. Right now, I'm leaning towards making the site more of an all-purpose brewing online brewing place. My reason for this is because I can see the visits that we get to our site, and at this point a lot of people coming to the site are arriving from a search engine. Regular member traffic seems to be limited to newsletter downloads and looking for meeting information. »

My own comments
I agree with the comments that are being posted here, I think that there is great value in developing a knowledge base with a local flavour. I'll list a bunch of examples below, but by no means do I think the list is complete.
I think we could develop a table of famous water styles and how to treat local water with gypsum, espom, etc to bring our local profile in line with them, how to treat for chloramine, etc.
Maybe a table showing locally available substitutes for things that are harder to get, ie what's a good replacement for carapils? Special B? can I use 2-row where pilsner malt is called for?
Maybe we could start a trading board, I know a lot of people are growing their own hops or are participating in bulk purchases, and may want to swap for different varieties. I ranch my own yeast and am sure others do the same and might want to trade. Or get rid of equipment that has no use to them but may help start someone else to get into brewing.
Maybe even let people add some of their brewdates to the calendar so that, if invited, people can go lend a hand and see how other people brew, maybe pick up some techniques or offer advice while they're there.
Just to give my comments some
Just to give my comments some context, let me explain that I'm a novice homebrewer and something of a fairweather member of the EHB (I attend meetings when I remember, and when I'm not busy with my family). I learned about this site by thumbing through a copy of the newsletter at South Side, and so far have used it mostly to remind myself of when meetings are. I prefer the paper copy of the newsletter. I have subscribed to the RSS feed however, so if there were forum activity I would be reading it regularily.
What I would like to see on the website is brewing information that I can't get from other forums. The web has more general homebrewing information than I can deal with as it is, and I don't need to come to this site to get it. That being said, having that text on the site will increase search hits and traffic, which is probably a good thing so far as club profile (and maybe site revenue) is concerned. It just won't help me personally all that much :-)
So what can kind of brewing information can I only get here? Information about brewing in Edmonton I suppose.
- how to treat Edmonton tap water (do you need to do... anything?)
- how to source supplies locally (special-B malt???)
- recipes adapted to ingredients that I can source locally. (maybe in a nice wiki presentation!)
- Edmonton brewing and beer events
I suppose I should just go ahead and pose questions like these in the forums, and I'll probably get exactly what I'm looking for. I should go ahead and do that.
EHG Website content suggestions
As an EHG member I've come to this site for the Worthouse News, and to find the date of the next meeting. Worthouse News is awesome; a fantastic resource for brewers of all levels - I'd choose to read Worthouse News over BYO, or Zymurgy any day (perhaps due to it's local relevance). Meeting dates are important, as is info on competition deadlines/entry forms, etc.
Here's my thoughts on what I think this website could do better:
I would like to see meeting minutes or a meeting summary for those meetings that I am unable to attend (perhaps online access to EHG members only?).
To non-EHG members, this website is a great ambassador of the EHG. I know that reading Worthouse News played a big part in my decision to join the club. I think it would be great if the home-page of the website included short history of the club, upcoming events and activities, a mission statement, and an invitation to local homebrewers to join the club.
How to increase traffic? Personally, almost all of my homebrewing related internet activity is focused on three things:
-Q&A (I go to http://www.brewboard.com)
-supplies & equipment sourcing
-brewing recipe/ideas searching
If the EHG website had all of these things organized, I would use go there first. For example: I had a hard time sourcing a good burner for my brewery, it was only after speaking with another EHG member that I got a tip to search the ethnic stores on 34th Ave here in the city; prior to that, I must have spent 2 hours scouring the internet. I think a list of recommended local suppliers, best-bet internet stores, and gear recommendations, (indexed by item) could be extremely useful (perhaps in a wiki format?).
I hope this is helpful.
I'm a novice brewer, only
I'm a novice brewer, only doing extracts and Brewhouse "hacks" presently. I feel as though supplies and equipment sourcing are a huge factor. If and when I choose to go AG I feel like I won't know where to go to get the proper/affordable/innovative equipment/ingredients to make the experience better.
Getting a stable and participating online community here might be a challenge but I agree with everything above poster CHEINZ said
And, worthouse news was a huge factor in my decision to join, so keep up the awesome articles.
See you at the january meeting (my first).
Hey
I just joined. I am with you Brandon.
I just bought my first kit after a 25 year wait.
I am brewing Brew House Munich Dark Lager. it is in secondary at 54F.
I am going to brew a Pilsner and then my holy grail, a really nice Alt.
I was fortunate to have spent a week in Dussledorf this spring and was Smitten by Frankenheim Alt.
Very Delicious.
