KeggingLooking at getting into kegging with a Cornelius keg system. I have had no luck with Edmonton beer/wine shops. Is there anywhere in Edmonton to get wither: 1. Cornelius kegs and a 5 pound CO2 tank (sourcing the smaller parts online therefore saving on the shipping of the larger/heavier items) Thanks »

New to Kegging
Hey, I'm fairly new to homebrewing, but I want to start kegging my beer, What kinds of things do I need other than a Keg, and where can I get them? And then maybe some advice on how to actually Keg the beer.
Thanks
First you need to decide
First you need to decide between a Tap-A-Draft style system or a corny-keg system.
Tap-A-Draft has a few advantages: fits in the fridge (each bottle holds 6L, and the regulator/tap assembly attaches to the bottle), and the system is much cheaper to get into.
Disadvantages: the regulator takes 8 oz CO2 bulbs (2 or 3 per batch), the regulator is not adjustable (set at 15 PSI), and if you want more than one brew on tap at a time you need to buy another regulator/tap assembly.
Corny-Keg system advantages: a single keg holds 19L, CO2 is purchased in bulk (about $15 to refill a 10lb cylinder, which should last at least a years worth of brewing), carb levels can easily be adjusted at the regulator, and the corny kegs are pretty much indestructible.
Disadvantages: rather pricey to get into, and a dedicated fridge or chest freezer is needed.
If you want to go the corny-keg route, you'll need: a CO2 regulator (try to get one with a back-flow preventer or at least a valve on the outlet), a CO2 tank, corny kegs, draft line (the vinyl stuff, sized for your fittings), in and out connectors for the corny kegs (Pepsi kegs are ball-lock, Coke kegs are pin-lock), and a tap (a picnic-tap will do just fine). If you get the cornys from princess auto, you should change out the o-rings (or at least pressure test the keg) before you fill it with beer.
When you keg a batch of beer in a corny keg: fill the keg to about 3 inches from the top, lock the hatch, and then chill the beer. Set the regulator on the CO2 tank to your desired pressure (I usually keep it around 10 PSI), then plug it on to the in side of the corny keg (you'll hear CO2 rushing in at this point) - never let beer run back into the regulator! Leave the keg pressured up for about a week, and your beer should be carbonated. I usually carbonate my beer in about 10 minutes by cranking up the pressure and shaking the keg. When dispensing, turn off the CO2, and then use the pressure release valve on the hatch of the corny to release some pressure (you don't want to blast the beer into your mug), and then fill your mug with the picnic tap attached to the outlet side of the keg. When done dispensing, be sure to pressure the tank back up.
If you want to get fancy, you can do a calculation as to how much dispensing line you'll need to drop the pressure at the faucet to about 0.5 - 1 PSI for dispensing, then you can leave the pressure on the keg all the time.
You can get the Tap-A-Draft and the corny-keg system at Southside Winning Wines Plus, or you can find the stuff online.
Hope that helps.
Hey Guys/Gals, As of May 27,
Hey Guys/Gals,
As of May 27, 2009 Princess Auto still has some kegs left. I just picked up two more at the North end location. And when I called their head office they said the South end location also had a few kicking around.
Still new shipments
Princess Auto in Mayfield still has a few kegs left, it looks like they got a fresh pallet between my last visit and now and people have descended on it with great eagerness. June 19.
What do you call the kegs when you ask at Princess Auto
I went into the south side princess auto yesterday to see if they had any kegs and was told that they hadn't carried kegs in over 7 years. I used words like kegs, beer kegs, pop kegs, ball lock kegs...in all cases they said didn't carry them. Is SODA keg the secret password into the princess-auto-keg club?
Westend Princess Auto
As of april 26 the west end princess auto had over 20 soda kegs, picked up another one
Filling CO2 tanks
I'm wondering where people are filling their CO2 tanks and what they are paying?
Any oxypro location will do
Any oxypro location will do it. You just drop off your empty cylinder and they give you a full one. I think it's just a hair less than $30 for a 20lb cylinder.
OxyPro
In the past I have used Praxair, now I use OxyPro (8604 53 Ave). It's pretty conveniently close to where I live. I don't remember how much it cost to fill my 20 lb. cylinder last time, but it was somewhere around $20-$30 dollars (maybe a little more, but I don't think so). You will probably be able to fill it at any welding shop close to where you live for a similar cost.
Tank Swap
So if you leave your tank and get a new one, is there a point in sourcing new/used CO2 tanks or do you just pay a deposit with your initial pickup?
I've been searching the nets for regulators and tanks but maybe it's cheaper to do the tank swap than hang on to a new tank and find a fill while you wait place.
Cheers
Ian
go deposit
I'm not sure what the deposit is now, but it's way more convenient than having to buy a cylinder outright. I bought my kegging system 2nd hand and the guy gave me his nearly empty CO2 tank for the deposit, which was $50. Ever since I've just swapped my empty for a full one. You never have to worry about getting the tanked "hydro'd", which is a pain in the butt and has to be done every 5 years (I think). Just pay the deposit.
As far as regulators/gauges are concerned, my unit is actually from an oxy-acetylene torch set which the guy I bought it from had the works "switched over" for CO2. I know that there is a diaphragm in the regulator which has to be matched for the gas, but I'm not sure about the gauges. It may be cheaper to get a regulator set 2nd hand from a welder and have it converted rather than getting a proper CO2 set new.
Princess Auto
If anyone is still looking for kegs Princess Auto stores all across Canada just got a large shipment of Soda Kegs. They're selling out of the surplus section for $25 each. I picked up a few, and they were in pretty good shape.
As of Saturday March 7 @
As of Saturday March 7 @ 10am, the Princess Auto on the south side (Edmonton) had 20 ball lock kegs left @ $25 each.
Princess Auto kegs
My sister in-law works there, and they're sold out now.
They were pin-lock.
Wow, that was quick. Sold out
Wow, that was quick. Sold out at both locations?
I was in the Princess Auto in
I was in the Princess Auto in Lloyd and they still had about 10 in stock. I picked up a few... unfortunately they are ball lock and the ones I have are pin lock. But for the price I can't complain.
South Side Princess Auto
Has another dozen or so pinlock kegs in stock, I think this will be something that trickles in for a while so its best to keep visiting.
Cheers
Kegs and Equipment
Guys I've checked all over the net in Canada and the US and Simgo in BC has as good or better prices than anyone on CO2 tanks, towers, hoses and fittings. Plus they'll ship it via Greyhound. I have switched to ball lock kegs and want to get rid of the the two pin lock I have. If you know where I can find two 58 liter kegs please let me know as well.

Simgo no go
I have a real problem navigating the Simgo website. I honestly can't make head or tail of it. I was looking for barbed swivel nuts, and couldn't find them. They have drawings rather than photos. It's madness! There's a new Canadian online brewing supply outfit:
http://www.homebrew-supplies.ca/
Simgo
Better to just call. Their site is a smidge archaeic.

Kegconnection.com
I am having a kit shipped right now from www.kegconnection.com , would have preferred to purchase local but I could'nt find a price that apealed to me. Found these guys, they have a bunch of set ups, I went with a dual keg set up using a 20oz paintball C02 tank. wich works for me because I play paintball and already have a couple tanks. Kit comes with 2 recondition soda kegs 1 20oz tank, all the lines and connections, regulator and manifold. This kit came to about 240 canadian (with shipping included) I think. I also seen they had a special on a single keg setup for just over 100$ (but have to add shipping and convert to canadian).
Keg Connection
I also just placed an order with these guys. Excellent service. I spoke with Ben on the phone today, and got it all ordered and shipped by USPS (to avoid UPS brokerage fees). I spent about $210 for a 5lb tank (Aluminum), a regulator with dual check valves, 8 ft of gas line, 10 ft of beer line, a couple of disconnects. In town, I was looking at $220 for a regulator that I still needed to add valves to, and a 5lb tank.
Kegs @ kijiji
A guy in Edmonton is selling kegs on kijiji:

I didn't know that Winning
I didn't know that Winning Wines had kegs. I'm glad I signed up to the forum!
I bought my kegs at DSI (http://www.dsicontrols.ca). He's not really set up for retail, so he might not appreciate everybody descending on him. If there were a big enough order, though, I think he'd go for it. If anybody wants to make a group order, please post here. He charged me $30 each for 4 kegs.
I got my CO2 at oxypro, 455-7346, 11432 156 Street
I bought a 15-lber, and its been in continuous use for almost a year without a refill.
Group order?
I wouldn't mind doing a group order.. For only $30. I would like to buy at least Two. Or if anybody has any they would like to sell my email is jlvanwagoner@gmail.com
I phoned DSI, and they'll
I phoned DSI, and they'll give me info on price and availability tomorrow morning. I told them I was interested in 4 kegs (2 for you, 2 for me). Anybody else?
Btw, these are pin lock.
Also, does anyone else find the verification before posting on this forum rather annoying? The fact that you have to do it for preview is especially tedious.
That would be great, I will
That would be great, I will buy 2 (depending on price)... I may, however, not be able to get into Edmonton to pick them up until Feb 26. If that's a problem I will make a trip down this weekend, or next. (I'm in Cold Lake).
And yes, the verification process almost kept me from registering for the site... at first glance it didn't seem like there was enough content on the site to bother.
I just got the quote:
I just got the quote: $40/keg+GST. Still interested?
I would be interested in
I would be interested in buying two. When do you think that you would be making the order?
Sorry, guy. I bought the kegs
Sorry, guy. I bought the kegs on Thursday. Do you want to contact DSI yourself?
Yes, thank you.
Yes, thank you.
I've talked to a friend of
I've talked to a friend of mine up here in Cold Lake. He is also interested in buying 2 kegs. Let me know when you find a price. And when you would need them to be picked up.
I emailed you.
I emailed you.
Kegging Supplies
I bought my kegerator parts (co2 tank, two tap tower, beer and gas lines, connectors) from Simgo in BC. Great service and decent prices. Simgo.com
I've found kegs at a few of the Winning Wines plus stores in Edmonton. The one on the South side usually has some.

Thanks, actually found a keg
Thanks, actually found a keg at a store here in Edmonton.
Where?
I'm looking to buy a system also, where did you find your keg? Also where did you get your CO2 Tank? Also, if you don't mind me asking... what did you pay for your keg?
I found it at Winning Wines
I found it at Winning Wines on Stoney Plain for $40 back just after New Years. Didn't buy it but should have.
Haven't bought any kegging equipment...yet.
I need some Kegerator info from local, pro's. Everyone at EHG.ca
I am new to this topic but i am very interested in learning. I am planning to build a kegerator. I have no homebrew. I was wondering what kind of kegerator set ups you guys have? Like a mini fridge, full sized fridge, or mini freezer?? I was wondering what kind of CO2 tanks are easily refilable, for example a pin type (paintball)? If i baught a tank like this with my kegerator kit, and it couldnt be filled, could i use the empty to cover the deposit on a full tank??? I was also wondering where i could buy poney kegs full of beer, if they are available??I know this is alot of information at one time, but does anyone know keg sizes and dimensions (diameter and height? How much space is required extra to allow for the sankey coupler?? This info is vital in making the final decision on the fridge or freezer i will need. I live in a basment appartment, so i dont have a whole lot of room, but i would still like to have one in my appartment.
Thanks alot for the help

OK, that's your first problem right there.

Not sure what you mean here. Where did you buy your kegerator kit? What does it include? Not familar with "pin type (paintball)" tanks. Paintball tanks usually don't really cut it. Most home brew keggers use "5 pounders", 10 pounders or 20 pounders. 20 pounders are about 1 metre high, thats what usually you see the Coke guy delivering to 7-11, etc. 5 pounders are about the size of a household fire extingusher. My 5 pounder lasts 6 months. (Unless you have a pinhole leak, don't get me started). I get my 5 pounder filled at Linde in Nisku for $25, which I think is a bit of a rip but...
I think posts above talk of where to fill in Edmonton and if they have exchanges.
You can order online MoreBeer.com, KegWorks.com or better yet get it from Andrew at Winning Wines.
I started with a kit from Winning Wines and a free chest freezer from Kijiji with cobra taps. I still have that and it doubles as a lagering chest. If you want to have real taps you need to build a collar and get shanks for the faucets. Let me know if that's what you want to do. Easiest just to use cobra taps and open the top.
But if you're in an apartment the best thing is a Bar fridge and a tower. Get a bar fridge. At least 4.6 cu. ft. Might have to shave the knobs that hold the shelfs flush, but it will hold two cornies with a bit of modifications. Cut hole in top to push through the hoses and attach a twin tower. (MoreBeer or KegWorks I haven't seen Andrew with this hardware but maybe ask.) Wait for London Drugs or Canadian Tire to have them on sale for $139 for a nice stainless steel one and you have a nice piece of furniture. Ironically a cheap off brand one is best. When you cut through the top you don't want to hit any freeon pipes. Cheap ones only have styrafoam insulation on the top.
Let me know exactly what you have now and I can give you more specific advise.
